Sam Rayburn has started back down this week and is at 163.83. The water is off color around the Attoyac River. The Angelina River is clearer in the mid lake area, then the water clears more as you move south.

There are a lot of fish being caught around the buck brush and grass edges on Stanley spinner baits. White and chartreuse are the best colors, 3/8 or ½ oz are the best weight. Small crankbaits pulled along the grass that is just under the surface has also been getting some nice fish. The inside grass line has been around 3 ft with the outside running from 8 to 12 ft. This grass is changing fast. Where ever you found grass last week, it may be gone this week. With the grass changing and the lake dropping the fish will be moving. They will be in and out of drains and ditches and off points as they chase shad to fatten up for winter. The trap bite has been off and on, so keep one handy. Remember shad is what they are chasing so try to throw colors that match them. The deep bite has been on and off but Texas and Carolina rigged small worms and flukes have been catching a few fish. We did get out this week and caught some fish up shallow early in the morning before the bite slowed down. Then we moved out to some structure that was in the mouth of the creek. We lost one good fish because she decided not to come out of the cover. She hit the Texas rigged worm when I was coming up over the cover in about 20 ft of water. At first I thought I was hung up, then she moved just a little and I pulled her up about 6 inches. She pulled back down real slow and just sat there. I pulled her again and then she pulled about two foot of line off the reel and just sat there. It was a tug of war for a few seconds that seemed like forever before she sawed the line off. One day last week we had 20 lbs with one nice kicker fish that was caught on the New Stanley SwimMax Jig. The kicker fish is what it takes to bring a stinger from the teens to the twenty pound mark in a hurry. It can be the last cast of the day so, NEVER GIVE UP!

I have been drawing names but no one has won the free fishing trip for this fall. Several have come close; calling just an hour or so after the time ran out. Make sure to sign up, and keep checking for your name. You’ve got to stay on your toes. If you can’t keep an eye on it have someone else check for you.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been fair this week. This time of year you to play with the wind as the fronts move in. Between the fronts there are usually a few days that the wind will lay down. Then we have some beautiful days to get out on the water and catch a few fish. We do our best to get a few people out to enjoy the cool fall days and the trees that have begun to change colors.
Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty. It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Sam Rayburn has come up this week and is at 163.64 that’s around 3.5 feet rise in a week. That’s from all the rain we’ve had here and to our north. The water is off color in the mid lake area then clears as you move south.
We have had over 9 inches of rain in the last two weeks. How does this affect things? Well let’s take a look. First, the rain came from some cold fronts. That means it was cold rain and it cooled the surface of the water. The big deal is that cold water sinks to the bottom. Anyplace that had runoff; like some of the clay banks; would carry the off colored, cold water to the bottom. We pulled up to a place the other day, off a point, where a small drain came in and the creek came close to the point to fish for Crappie. The water depth was 16 ft and clear but as we circled around the water turned from clear to muddy. This is something you have to look for if you are fishing with rising water. We moved further into the pocket; where the creek moves back into the middle; and fished two places that the colored water had not gotten to yet. There are a lot of places that have lily pads and grass that will start to clear up quickly. We did get out this weekend with some nice weather and found a lot of places that the shad have started to move in some. The fishing was still a little slow but we caught about 25 fish, nothing real big, but I think they are moving in to a few places. These fish start moving up to fatten up for winter. They are chasing shad so look at some bait that will cover lots of water like the Stanley Spinner bait, Crankbaits and Traps. On the deeper edge a few fish are holding on the outside edge of the grass line, just hanging there. We picked up a few of them on Stanley Grass Jigs. The Carolina Rig pulled of the grass edge then working it down to the bottom has been picking up a few fish.

Stanley Jig has come out with some new products that you will want to take a close look at, like the Swimmax Jig. This Jig is built to come thru the grass and pads and it does just that. Then for you guys throwing the Ribbits, you’ve got the Ribbit Double-Take Hook. Then you’ve got the New Sidewinder. This is a “soft ringed” body bait that has got my attention along with some fish action. Check out these bait’s at Stanley’s website. http://fishstanley.com/

E2 Baits Company has a New Bait called DoodleBug out. This is a “Crawfish” bait that can be used in a lot of ways, from Texas rig with a light sinker to Carolina rigs off deep structure. It makes a great trailer on my jigs. This bait is loaded with salt and scent. My wife told me to take it outside. Man it smells so good I just can’t stand fishing without it. I think it makes a great bait to flip the brush with this fall and spring. Checkout all there baits on the website http://www.e2baits.com/

Giant Salvinia.

Doesn’t mean much too some folks, but it can mean a lot of cold hard cash out of your pocket. If you get caught with some hanging off your trailer when you leave the boat ramp it could cost up to $500. 00 per Plant, plus any court costs. This nasty junk needs to be pulled off the boat or trailer and put in the trash can before you leave the ramp. Also remember to drain all the water out of your live wells and boat at the ramp. If you’re changing lakes it is a good idea to wash your boat and trailer at a car wash to ensure Salvinia isn’t hitch-hiking on your equipment. If you see some on the lake somewhere you need to report it to 1-800- STOP-ANS. We need everyone to help stop the spread of this fern. Keep an eye on your boat and other boats and trailers around you. Some people don’t even know about this stuff. Tell people how invasive giant Salvinia is. If they get nasty just say, “Thank you for your time” and walk away. Remember they are messing up your lakes so do yourself a favor. Call in their TX numbers and let TPWD take it from there. Giant Salvinia is a highly invasive species of floating fern that is spreading thru the lakes. Fisherman and hunters who aren’t careful are the best friends giant Salvinia could have. The lack of concern expressed by some individuals is heartbreaking. The biggest problem is us. If we don’t start taking care of what we have now what will we have to look forward to? Everyone pays for the cleanup and it has cost us a bundle this year. Licenses and fees go up every year to help pay for this and many other things that we don’t even pay attention to.

Sam Rayburn is 5 feet low at 160.14 ft and the water temperature has dropped to around 69 degrees. Water color is clear in most of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.

Sam Rayburn has come up this week to 160.14. With all the rain we have had it should come up some more as the runoff from north of us makes its way into the lake. The water color has been clear in a few places and off color in others. Some of the backs of the creeks are muddy from the rain and will start to clear up slowly. We have had a lot of fish schooling on the points chasing shad this week. We should start to see the bite improve in the next few weeks as the water temperature cools down from the cold nights. The shad will start to move into the pockets with the bass not to far behind them. These fish will be fattening up for the winter on shad. These fish are chasing shad so look at some bait that will cover some water like the Stanley Spinner bait, Crankbaits and Traps. The water temperature has been around 70 degrees. The water is starting to clear some.

Sam Rayburn is 5 ft; so running around can be a little tricky. Getting a couple of good maps, sitting down and taking a look may keep you out of trouble. You could hire a guide and let him show you how to get around the bad areas and catch a few fish at the same time.
The City of Warsaw is out there right at where the boat lane starts so watch out for it. I have had a lot of folks asking where that is. This may help you in finding it. If you’re running up the lake and you go under the 147 bridge to the long cut up the Angelina River it is just before you get to the timber line. The old Rail Road ran beside the town and rail cars were unloaded there.

There has been a little topwater bite on Stanley Ribbits and Pop-Rs in a few pockets and off points with grass or pads. Throwing a few lipless crankbaits and Stanley Spinners has been getting a few. There a lot of small fish being caught with a nice fish here and there. The good news is, it has started to pickup some and we have been getting them to chase a little this week. The fall fatting up should be just around the corner. This is a time that they kick things into high gear and get real active chasing shad. We have been picking up some 4 and 5 lb fish everyday but the bite has been very light and you have to slow way down to get them. That’s where a good rod; like American Rodsmiths Team Series; comes into play. Anytime you’re fishing and the bite is light you need a good sensitive rod so you can feel those bites. Some of these bites feel like you broke a peace of thread and you can’t feel that on just any rod. If you want to get better at fishing deep with a Texas Rig or Jig you need a good rod and sensitive line to match. My best fish have been caught on offshore structure and humps. Look for these fish to make a move in the next few weeks. If you need help fishing offshore structure book a trip and I’ll help you learn to find and fish off the banks, this can help you on any lake you fish. Spring of 2010 is booking now.

Don’t forget we do Gift Certificates for Christmas that you can put under the tree. So make sure you make the hint to your better half or loved one.

Now is a good time if you got a boat to get it in the shop and have the water pump and Lower unit checked out and go ahead and have it tuned up for next time you use it. Don’t wait till spring and then have to take a number. There no big lines to wait in now. If going set it up for winter get it ready. Boy the boat shop gets crazy in the spring with everyone coming in to get repairs done. So don’t wait get them in there so you are ready to go fishing when you get a nice day.

The Crappie have been moving around a lot with some of them moving up river and some over the brush piles. We did get out there and fill a cooler.
The cool morning air has been Awesome. Recent sunrise light shows have been pretty darn spectacular and the sunsets ain’t to shabby either.
The 20 ft pontoon is ready to go for the larger Crappie trips. We will be renting it with a captain to drive. So get you trips booked now.

Boat takeoffs are free and open to the public. They take place in the morning from Papa’s On the Lake on Hwy 105 West. All other activities including weigh-ins, concerts, sponsor expo, fireworks, Outdoor Adventures Area take place within Buffalo Springs at the event site. There will be signs along Hwy 105 directing fans where to park.

Event parking is $5. Tickets available at the gate - $20 per day.

Area pro angler Sean Hoernke reeled in the top bass of the weekend, a 9 lb. 8 oz. monster that could earn him the Big Bass Award for the tournanment. Hoernke is from The Woodlands, Texas and his catch propelled him to the “Tundra Ten”. The field was cut to the top-10 following Saturday’s action.

Boat takeoffs are free and open to the public. They take place in the morning from Papa’s On the Lake on Hwy 105 West. All other activities including weigh-ins, concerts, sponsor expo, fireworks, Outdoor Adventures Area take place within Buffalo Springs at the event site. There will be signs along Hwy 105 directing fans where to park.

Event parking is $5. Tickets available at the gate - $20 per day.

Giant Salvinia.

Doesn’t mean much too some folks, but it can mean a lot of cold hard cash out of your pocket. If you get caught with some hanging off your trailer when you leave the boat ramp it could cost up to $500. 00, plus any court costs. This nasty junk needs to be pulled off the boat or trailer and put in the trash can before you leave the ramp. Also remember to drain all the water out of your live wells and boat at the ramp. If you’re changing lakes it is a good ideal to wash your boat and trailer at a car wash to ensure Salvinia isn’t hitch-hiking on your equipment. If you see some on the lake somewhere you need to report it to 1-800- STOP-ANS. We need everyone to help stop the spread of this fern. Keep an eye on your boat and other boats and trailers around you. Some people don’t even know about this stuff. Tell people how nasty this giant Salvinia is. If they get nasty just say thank you for your time and walk away. Remember they are messing up your lakes so do yourself a favor, call in their TX numbers and let TPWD take it from there. Giant Salvinia is a highly invasive species of floating fern that is spreading thru the lakes. Fisherman and hunters who aren’t careful are the best friends giant Salvinia could have. The lack of concern expressed by some individuals is heart breaking. The biggest problem is us. If we don’t start taking care of what we have now what will we have later to look forward to? Everyone pays for the cleanup and it has cost us a bundle this year. Licenses and fees go up every year to help pay for this and many other things that we don’t even pay attention to.

What brought on this article? I went to put gas in the boat Sunday and found 4 complete Salvinia plants on the ground at the gas station. That means someone transported them from another lake or pond and spread the stuff everywhere he had dragged his boat and trailer.

Sam Rayburn has been holding its on at 159.34 with the help of the rain this week. The water color has been clear in a few places and off color in others. There has been a lot of talk about the fall turnover and some think the lake is in limbo. This front should bring some changes in the lake. The fish have been scattered out in the grass or out in deep water on the ledges and drops. The best bite on the cold and rainy days has been on Stanley Ribbits and Spinner baits over the grass and around the edges. When the sun comes out we move out to the edges and soak some small worms to pickup a few more fish. On the deeper bite we caught blacks out to 24 ft off points and humps. These fish should move up as the shad head back in the creeks. The bite should improve this week and we are hoping to catch some big fish this fall with the grass.

I have been drawing names but no one has won the free fishing trip for this fall. Make sure to sign up, and keep checking for your name. I have had a few find their name on the site but it was past the deadline for calling in. You’ve got to stay on your toes. If you can’t keep a eye on it have someone else check for you.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been a lot better this week. We have been picking some up off the brush piles.
There is always one person who can out fish the other ones. Sometimes it’s all about feeling that soft bite. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty. It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Sam Rayburn is still dropping slowly as they pull more water each day. The fishing has been tough on most folks as the weather has a big affect on the fish. The fish can get active right before a front, after the front they can shut down and refuse to bite. There are a lot of changes that go with the weather. You get high and low pressure, the directions of the winds change the water gets muddy a blue bird day happens, the fish quit biting. Now you have to change your presentation, bait color or even the type of bait. We caught some fish in the grass early this week on Stanley Ribbits and Spinner baits, but as the week went on the weather changed. The fish would stop biting after the first hour and then it would get real tough to get anything going. We switched to working the grass with a shake head jig and a light Carolina rig tip with a needle worm to hook into few more fish. Oops! What’s a needle worm you say? The bait is made by E2Bait Company and they come in 5 and 8 inches. The needle worm gets thinner as you get to the tail and that gives it a lot of action. The special material it is made from makes the tail standup and wiggle, but don tell anyone. We changed locations several time and caught a few more fish. After a while we started hitting structure. The best structure seems to be in the 8 to 12 foot range, and believe me the fishing was still tough. The Carolina rig and Stanley Football Jig was the best here as we worked the structure very slowly to get the fish to bite. As we fished one of these spots I had the smallest tap on the line. I set the hook and the fish took, off putting a bow in the heavy American Rodsmiths rod I was using. It took some work but I got her turned out of the cover and started for the surface then the heifer broke free. It’s always about the one that got away.

Sam Rayburn is almost 5 ft low at 159.66 ft and the water temperature has been dropping all week, 76 degrees the last time I checked. This is a direct result of the cool front and rain we have had for the last few days. The water is muddy in the creeks from the rain and clearing as you move out.
The cooler temperature has been nice and we have had a lot of groups of fish getting active. The top water bite has been on in some places. The Stanley Ribbit, Buzz Bait and Pop-Rs have been great once you find a active group. Flukes and Senko’s pulled over the grass and around the edges been picking up a few fish. Stanley spinner bait and crankbaits have been doing great covering some water to find the active fish. The fish are holding tight to the grass and there is a lot of it this year. With the water cooling down the lake seems to have been going thru the fall turn over but it’s hard to tell. I know the bite has been down some. The big fish will be showing up soon and that’s when things will get going for everyone looking to catch that big one. We took a short run the other afternoon to look at and check a few places. We found the back of the creek s were muddy. Working our way out we did hang into one that would have gone around 7 lbs. As we went to lip her, she shook her head just right, then she was gone. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

It could be Grammy, who hasn’t fished in 15 years, or maybe the 10 year old who has never fished. Sometimes it’s all about feeling that soft bite. Sometimes it’s having the patience to sit and wait for a greedy fish to hammer the bait. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty. It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Sam Rayburn is just a little more than 4 feet low at 159.80 ft and the water temperature has been holding around 84 degrees. Water color is clear in most of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.

Sam Rayburn is still dropping slowly as they pull more water each day. The showers this week has helped keep the temperature down. Because of the showers we’ve enjoyed some nice days on the lake and even caught some pretty respectable fish. Most of the fish came out of the grass on Ribbit frogs. After a catching a few fish I started throwing Crankbaits and Stanley Spinner baits, picking up a few fish just off the edge of the grass lines. There’s a lot of grass out there; some of it is out to 10 ft deep; and that gives the bass plenty of places to hide. Most of the fish I found were in small groups. Once I found them you could catch them like I just mentioned. The trick worm was another good bait choice, on light Texas and Carolina Rig dropped off the edge of the grass. The fish are starting to setup in a few places. Hopefully things are going to get better as it has been really tough most of the year. There have been a few fish caught on offshore structure on old monster worms and Football jigs. I’ll be looking for some big fish to setup in a few places this fall and I can hardy wait to catch them.
